Everyone’s favourite travel guide, Lonely Planet, unveiled the list of 10 countries to visit next year, with our home-ground, coming in tops.

Singapore has yet another feather to add to its hat of accolades since the travel publisher, Lonely Planet, revealed the island-state as their top country to visit in the ‘Best in Travel 2015’ list. Incidentally, this is also the first time that the nation is appearing on the roundup.

Along with Philippines clinching the 8th position, Singapore is also only 1 of 2 Asian destinations on the list. Other countries who made the cut to top 10 were Namibia, Lithuania, Nicaragua, Ireland, Republic of Congo, Serbia, St Lucia and Morocco.

The list is essentially based on three broad criteria, such as whether there’s a special event happening in the country, the destination’s impending popularity and whether they are family-friendly and worthy of the cost to travel.

Hence we can safely say that Singapore’s 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee) next year and the host of celebrations lined up around it would have positively swayed the decision to our favour. Coupled with the slew of recent and upcoming developments, clearly the Republic is raring to excel in multiple fields and will be brimming with more festivities in time to come.

Beyond the Singapore Sports Hub, visitors can look forward to the National Art Gallery, slated to open next year and 2 new terminals at the award-winning Changi Airport, alongsidelife-changing’ food (hawker and fine-dining) options and the emerging local fashion scene as mentioned by Mr Chris Zeiher, Lonely Planet’s Marketing Director.

Ultimately, if we were to look underneath Singapore’s shiny facade of towering skyscrapers, there does exist a whole selection of cultural delights – from food to colonial architecture, museums and the ever-growing arts scene. With all that to boast and more, we can’t deny that there’s a certain level of pride from seeing our home-ground on the list – perhaps we won’t be leaving the country for an escape next year.
