These richly hued pencils never fail to make an impact. With our round up of kajals to try, you’ll be able to create a 2 minute smokey eye easily.

If you have ever seen or used a kajal you would know that its shape differs from your usual eyeliner. Often spotted in its trademark conical shape, kajals have been used for centuries throughout Asia, Middle East and Africa. They are still popular till date and have been adopted by the various global beauty markets as well. Back in the day, kajals were used for beauty and health purposes. Formulated with ingredients such as camphor, these eye products were used to not only intensify the appearance of beautifully deep set eyes but treat them at the same time.

Fast forward a few centuries and we are still using kajals to draw attention to our eyes. Think of it as a smokey eye product in the form of a chubby stick. The conical shape and precise angle of the tip is useful in reaching the very corners of your waterline. The formula allows you to smudge and smoulder the liner across your waterline for a smokey effect. Here are 3 of our favourite ways to use the kajal.

AS A BASE

The trick to long lasting eye makeup is to layer your eye shadows over a base. Use the kajal as a base by running it all over your lid. Use your ring finger to blend the product out slightly and layer your shadows over. To experiment, layer royal blue or purple shadows over the black kajal base for a pop of colour.

AS AN EYELINER

Do not expect perfectly lined eyes with a kajal. If you are looking to pull off a lightly smoked eyeliner look for the day, run the kajal across your waterline and smudge it using a Q-tip or shader brush. The beauty of using a kajal is that it wears off beautifully as the day passes. Instead of being left with panda looking eyes, you’ll notice a gorgeous after stain. It is no surprise then why beauty lovers would choose a kajal as their eyeliner – it is so long wearing.

AS A SHADOW

If you are looking to step out with a 2 minute smokey eye, using a kajal is your best bet. Simply apply the product directly to both your top and lower lash line. Using a Q-tip or fluffy shadow brush, diffuse the colour upwards ensuring that it does not go past your crease. Once you have acheived your desired colour pay off, re-apply the kajal on your top lash line to mimic the appearance of fuller looking lashes.
