Why should you tone your skin? We break down the facts about toners, pick our favourites and find out if they really are a vital step in our skincare regimes.

In the midst of all things skincare-related, we sometimes forget the importance of toning our skin. But not to worry, we’re here to remind you.

What is a toner and why is it important?

Even though many people choose to leave toners out – toning is a vital step in completing your cleansing process. After cleansing, a toner will help remove unwanted oils, dirt and debris that the cleanser may have unwittingly left behind. The product will also help sooth, nourish and rehydrate the skin, while at the same time restore the natural pH level. After completing this step, your skin is all prepped for moisturiser.

Which toner should I use?

Some toners clarify and exfoliate the skin at the same time – they remove all traces of dirt and oil. These toners are usually very strong and contain alcohol – which can be very drying to the skin.

If your skin is very oily – opt for a stronger product (still without alcohol), as this will help to control and reduce the oil production.

If your skin is normal to very dry – opt for a gentle toner that does not exfoliate the skin.

Looking for a natural option? Try out rosewater – this is the gentlest of toners available on the market.

Our tip: If your skin is tight after cleansing – it is a clear indication that a toner is needed.

How to use a toner?

For optimal results, use a toner once or twice a day depending on your skin type. Simply apply the product to a cotton pad and gently sweep it across your face. If the cotton pad comes out dirty, think about changing your cleanser as it is not doing a good job.

If you have very dry skin, cut down your use of toners to two or three times a week.

What to look out for?

When choosing a toner, stay clear of products that contain alcohol, citrus or overly fragrant scents – this will irritate your skin and can lead to major breakouts or other skin problems.

Be careful of over toning – doing it more than twice a day may strip your skin of its natural oils.

Happy toning!
