Killer Question: Is it possible to shrink your pores?

updated the Thursday, July 14, 2016

We attempt to answer the ultimate skincare question regarding pesky enlarged pores.

There are plenty of skincare products out there that claim to refine and minimise large pores. There are also many tricks circling the internet  – from rubbing ice cubes over your face to using egg white masks. You can also spend a fortune on intense facial treatments that aim to reduce the appearance of your pores.

So, is it actually scientifically possible to make to pores disappear? Well, let’s set the record straight: it is physically impossible to shrink your pores. “Pore size is genetically determined,” according to New York City dermatologist Debra Jaliman. And because pores don’t have muscles around their openings, they cannot actually open and close. Yup, despite what your mum or aunt might have told you, you can’t steam those pores open!

Temporary solutions

That said, you can definitely make those pores appear temporarily smaller by using the right products and the proper cleansing techniques. When pores are clogged, they are more glaringly obvious, so you’ll want to invest in skincare products or facial treatments that reduce oil secretion, remove blackheads and clear out congested pores. Also, learn to look for the word “non-comedogenic” on labels – this means the product won’t clog your pores. You don’t want to be caking all that pore-unfriendly makeup on your face only find that it’s making your situation worse!

Sure, these are only temporary solutions, but if you’ve been blessed with large pores, there isn’t much you can do about it. Just remember to keep your skin clean!

Is it possible to enlarge your pores?

Unfortunately, while it is almost impossible to permanently shrink your pores, it is actually possible to exacerbate the condition of your pores and make them increase in size. If you pop a pimple or remove a blackhead incorrectly, you risk damaging the pore and enlarging it. Sun damage can also enlarge pores because you end up damaging the structural tissue and collagen that your skin requires.

Clearly, you’re going to want to take good care of your skin to ensure your complexion remains in peak condition!
