Put aside your contouring brushes because it’s all about looking natural with light this summer.

There’s a new makeup trend in town that doesn’t involve loads of foundation, highlighter, bronzers and contouring powders. Meet the latest anti-contouring beauty trend runway models (at Issey Miyake, Alexander Wang and Isabel Marant shows to name a few), beauty bloggers and makeup artists can’t get enough of: strobing.

Put simply, strobing is the antithesis of contouring. Unlike the Kim Kardashian contouring techniques that require time, skill, patience and a ton of products, strobing is all about accentuating what you have to glow in all the right places. Instead of playing with light and shadow, strobing just calls for light, and lots of it. You still get a slimmer face and high cheekbones but in a more subtle, natural manner.

So put away your contouring brushes and read on to find out how you can master this game-changing makeup technique.

GOOD COMPLEXION

Healthy, natural-glowing skin is essential to achieving this look as your complexion will be used as the base to catch the light and create spotlit areas to bring focus and shape to the face. A diet rich in anti-oxidants is a great way to start and if you want to take things a step further, face brightening sheet masks on a weekly basis should bring your complexion up to scratch.

FUSE YOUR SKINCARE

Wearing makeup and skincare at the same time? For strobing it’s a must if you want to get the dewy, fresh faced look. Wear your concealer and then add your moisturizer to it for a hydrating, highlighting effect. This helps you achieve a transparent, dewy glow without the need for bronzers or highlighters. If you’re going to wear foundation, go for non-matte that will sink into your skin and allow your pores to breathe.

ADD SHINE

Use a highlighting powder as a finishing touch on the points of your face that catch light naturally: your cheekbones, nose bridge, forehead and temples.
