Why, when tired, our makeup doesn’t hold as much?

Stress and fatigue affect our skin’s ability to absorb makeup properly. Here’s why.

Answer from Carine Larchet, Professional makeup artist at the Roche-Posay‘s Atelier Maquillage Correcteur.

Fatigue  and stress  both generate the secretion of a chronic stress hormone: cortisol – a substance which will act directly on the cellular matrix of the skin. Thus, the dermis will degrade faster and will lose elasticity and thickness.

When the skin is tired, it is irritated, reddened much faster and tarnished. Its temperature can change due to the heat build up on reddened areas. The secretion of sebum and sweat is also modified which may lead to dehydration. The makeup will be absorbed at first but as these secretions increase, it will eventually melt due to the excess sebum and grease.

So all these factors have an effect on how our makeup holds which is why on particularly stressful days, your foundation of average quality will not even be noticed.”
