It’s called “honey skin”, and it’s wildly popular across Korea.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of the Korean “glass skin” skincare trend. The skin care routine went viral after Ellie Choi, a makeup artist based in Los Angeles, shared every step of her skincare routine on social media to achieve that coveted “glass skin” effect.

“Glass skin”, as you might’ve deduced, essentially refers to that quintessentially Korean trend of clear, luminous and almost-transparent skin. While this buzzy new K-beauty trend caught the attention of every beauty publication worldwide, it turns out it is not the only definite Korean beauty trend to know.

In fact, long before the glass-like skin became a beauty fixation, “honey skin” was – and is still – all the rage in Korea. A simple Instagram search on “honey skin” alone surfaces over 177,000 photo results, indicative of how rife the beauty trend is, to the point where people are flaunting their impossibly luminous, supple skin reminiscent of a newborn on their social media feed.

“Honey Skin” v. “Glass Skin”

As Sarah Lee (of Glow Recipe) shared with Allure, “honey skin” is the slightly older term used to describe hydrated, luminous skin that is beautifully supple and plump with nourishment. “Glass skin”, however, has to do more with the radiance and texture of your skin.

While “honey skin” is achieved through using oils and rich, emollient creams that offer an instant and lasting hydration, for a stunning honey-like sheen to the skin, “glass skin” is achieved through the exclusive 5-step skin routine that works to improve your texture and radiance from within.

At the end of the day, “glass skin” and “honey skin” are different spins on essentially the same skincare idea: once that involves strategically layering of brightening and hydrating products for an enviably supple, plump and youthful complexion.
