Local Talent: Tune in to the soulful vibes of One Hat Town
updated the Wednesday, May 18, 2016This lovely couple fell in love with each other in tiny Singapore and ended up touring the world together in pursuit of their common musical interest.
Seven years ago, Eli Merquita was just Claire Matthew’s guitar teacher. Seven years later, they are now a happily married couple in a two-person band called One Hat Town.
Having lived in Singapore for over 10 years, they started their career busking along Orchard Road and performing stints at the Esplanade Concourse. However, they have since relocated to Australia, and just last August released their debut EP Seven Years, composed of songs that give off very soulful indie and acoustic vibes.
We love how their songs speak through their lyrics, such as the origins of the band in One Hat Town and their simple love story in Love Is. The words of their songs are very poetic and reflect mostly real-life and personal events experienced by the husband and wife duo. Accompanied by the calm vocals of Eli and Claire, this makes their music very meaningful and easy to listen to.
