AFA: The 8th Asian Film Awards to be held in Macau

AFA is set to be one huge celebration of fashion – whether on the red carpet or behind the big screens. Here’s why we can’t wait for it!
The Oscars of the East, Asian Film Awards (AFA), is no less glamourous than any awards show. While the night celebrates the cinematic achievements of filmmakers in Asia, the red carpet is where our eyes will be transfixed.
Revered celebrities like Donnie Yen, Zhang Zi Yi and Tony Leung will be closely watched for who they’re wearing, their arm candy and of course for their captivating smiles for the cameras.
Decked in Gucci, Givenchy, Viktor & Rolf and Christian Dior, last year’s affair was no doubt exquisite and glitzy. Which is why we absolutely can’t wait for this year’s rendition of highs and lows, hits and misses.
Beyond the red carpet, the 8th AFA is similarly appreciating fashion behind the big screens. Among the four nominees running for the award of Best Costume Designer is a dark horse, William Chang. He scored a well-deserved nomination for Best Achievement in Costume Design at the recent 2014 Academy Awards for The Grandmaster.
Spanning 4 decades (1930s-70s), the film is a martial arts drama that succinctly captured some of the dramatic styles people wore at that time. It could be the typical asymmetric black capes and robes or the fur wraps and zoot suits, the styling was deemed impeccable.
The skills in costume design are far reaching, from traditional Korean Joseon-era costumes to modern, sci-fi outfits, the designers are well versed and deserving of the title. To say it’s a small feat for the jury is an understatement.
As the excitement builds up to the award show, all we can say is, let the gowns out and let the countdown begin!
The 8th Asian Film Awards will be held at Macau’s Dancing Water Theatre on the 27th of March.
