Instagram hashtags reveal the most popular foods around the world. Find out what Singapore is popular for –and no it’s not #chillicrab.

If you’re an avid Instagram user, you know it’s impossible to scroll through the app without coming across an endless assortment of photos with the #foodporn hashtag on your feed. To try to get away from pictures of food is to give up on Instagram completely.

But thanks to the photo sharing app and our fixation with capturing and hashtagging everything we eat, a British photo printing company Photoworld was able to compile data to create an interactive map titled “Food Capitals of the World” showcasing the most popular food in cities around the world.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Using the social media platform’s open Application Program Interface (API), Photoworld captured more than 100,000 snaps posted over a week from across the world. The returning data showed who was eating the most of what in cities around the world.

THE RESULTS

From #pizza to #bacon, the map uses hashtags to tabulate 18 popular dishes that get loads of love on Instagram. London, with their Shake Shack, Meatliquor and Five Guys outlets is an unsurprising hotspot for burgers, accounting for 4.7% of all the platform’s burger photos while New York City brings home the bacon with a whopping 8% of pictures that feature the tasty treat. No shocker too that Canada takes the crown for eating the most poutine while currywurst is the star snack in top 5 German cities. These were the predictable results but a few surprising finds were in store as well.

Head to the gallery to find out which cities turned out to be some of the unlikeliest food capitals for certain cuisines.
