YouTube Rewind: The top trending YouTube videos of 2016 in Singapore

Curious to know which viral YouTube videos got Singaporeans hooked on this year?

Needless to say, 2016 has been a pretty wild ride for the Internet. We laughed and shared innumerable memes (the Obama and Biden ‘bromance’ pictures are definitely a recent favourite), witnessed the Running Man and Mannequin challenge go viral on Youtube, and found ourselves inexplicably hooked on Channing and Jenna Dewan Tatum’s incredible Lipsync Battle video! When it comes to the world of viral videos, YouTube definitely reigns. To mark the end of 2016, the site has released its lists of the year’s top-trending videos globally, and also in Singapore.

If you’re wondering which Youtube videos had Singaporeans gripped on and trended the most this year, we have the answers right here – and it might just surprise you.

Top Trending YouTube Videos in Singapore (Non-Music)

  1. PPAP Pen Pineapple Apple Pen
  2. Why Young People Hate Chinese New Year
  3. National Day Song 2016: Tomorrow’s Here Today, performed by 53A

Top Trending YouTube Videos in Singapore (Music)

  1. The Chainsmokers – Closer (Lyric) ft. Halsey
  2. Fifth Harmony – Work from Home ft. Ty Dolla $ign
  3. Calvin Harris – This is What You Came For (Official Music Video) ft. Rihanna
  4. ZAYN – Pillowtalk
  5. Coldplay – Hymn for the Weekend (Official Video)

No surprises at what topped the list of top-trending non-music Youtube videos this year. We have all probably hit the replay button on the now infamous ‘Pineapple’ song video more than we cared to admit, only to get it stuck in our heads for awhile. (We’re definitely not sure how we feel about pineapples now, either.) It does seem that rest of the world agrees; the video ranked 2nd on globally trending videos, with Adele’s Carpool Karaoke with James Corden topping the list.

On the music front, summer chart-topper ‘Closer’ by The Chainsmokers got Singaporeans hooked, along with Fifth Harmony’s single; which we have to admit, is quite possibly the emblematic song of 2016. Did the list surprise you and did your favourite YouTube videos of the year make the list?
