The Louis Vuitton SS17 Womenswear collection was a vision of fluidity, femininity, strength, embellishments and an inescapable 1980s influence.

The Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2017 show this year took place at 2 Place Vendome, the location for the new Louis Vuitton flagship store that will soon throw open its doors to the public. Right at the heart of Paris, the location could not be more apt for the very Parisian vision for the collection. “She’s very French – the essence of Paris,” Creative director Nicolas Ghesquière says of the quintessential Louis Vuitton woman and of the Spring/Summer 2017 collections.

Contrasting against the backdrop that was the barren space of the new store, the collection was a vivacious vision of strength, fluid femininity, embellishments, and inescapably 1980s influences – all firmly rooted in Parisienne style. The show opened with a series of fluid, draped jersey dresses, reminiscent of the French women whose dresses seem to dreamily swish and float as they move. This fluidity in movement was consistent throughout the looks – from the black and white polka-dot pieces, to the 1980’s inspired hip-slung dresses. The tailoring, however, was anything but fluid and free, featuring strong silhouettes and shoulders, protruding necklines, and underarm and sleeve details that were dramatically sliced open.
