Ditch the Runway: Tom Ford showcases SS16 collection with music video

Tom Ford is a no show at fashion week, but makes his presence known with a music video starring Lady Gaga.

Tom Ford was notably missing from the runway this season. The designer’s absence was explained on Oct 2 when he dropped a music-video-styled runway show starring Lady Gaga.

Models Xiao Wen Ju, Kayla Scott, Valery Kaufman, Aymeline Valade, Lida Fox, Lucky Blue Smith, Alex Dunstan, David Agbodji and Tarun Nijjer, completed the cast to showcase the glitzy sequined clothes.

Instead of strutting their stuff, the models danced down the runway as the tiles lit up, while Gaga belted out her rendition of Chic’s I Want Your Love. Nile Rodgers collaborated with the pop star to record this version. The video was directed by acclaimed British fashion photographer, Nick Knight, and inspired by Ford’s love of the 1970s Soul Train.

Ford is not the only designer who has chosen to ignore the runway and make use of the Internet and social media to create buzz. This season, Burberry previewed its collection on Snapcat before it hit the runways while Misha Nonoo debuted her collection exclusively on Instagram.

The music video should come as no surprise as Tom Ford is no stranger to film. The 54 year-old designer came close to an Academy Award for his directorial debut, A Single Man starring Colin Firth. He’s currently working on his second feature film Nocturnal Animals starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams.
