In a bid to celebrate local talent, this film installation at KEEPERS is gearing up to be one impressive and creative visual feast.

They often say that if you want to proclaim your support for a cause, do it proudly and loudly for all to hear, and one convivial way to do that is by bursting into an energetic song as evident by Singapore’s very own Karaoke Party.

Largely a made-by-Singaporeans project, Karaoke Party will be exhibited as an interactive video installation of three short films featuring wardrobe by local designers and original scores by homegrown musicians – such as Vanessa Fernandez, Gentle Bones and Masia One. Karaoke, was a popular 90s activity that allowed amateur singers to sing along to recorded music, with the lyrics displayed on screen. Hence, as an ode to one of Singapore’s favourite pastime, the team of over 35 Singaporean creatives came together in one big culmination of a fashion-centric sing along masterpiece.

In true 90s style, all three films were shot in rustic locations such as Kam Leng Hotel. However, to portray foreign influence on Singapore’s ever-developing culture, one video was entirely filmed in Gunma, Japan – a prefecture over 100 kilometres away from Tokyo that features unusual architecture.

The genius of a project is the brainchild of Singaporean photographer, Lenne Chai, who with this installation aims to encourage Singaporeans to question their perception of locally-produced fashion and music. Co-produced by Singapore-born, Australia-raised filmmaker Ling Ang, Karaoke Party was also initiated with the goal of promoting more collaborations between local creatives.

“By combining engaging elements of fashion, music and pop culture, we hope that Karaoke Party will provide a starting point for audiences interested in local music and fashion but are unsure of where to begin,” said Lenne Chai, director and executive producer of Karaoke Party.

To be presented at KEEPERS: The Singapore Designer Collective – in a span of 10 days, from 16 – 25 January – guests at the exhibition will be more than welcome to unleash their vocal prowess if they so wish to. Hence, beyond it simply being a visual treat, the project manifests into one grand celebration of Singaporean talent. Now whoever says our nation has a dearth of creativity deserves a front and centre admission to this installation.
