Instead of travelling to Japan to wear yukatas on the street, you can now do so right in Singapore with the special collection from Japanese retailer, Uniqlo.

When in Japan, there is without a doubt that you would partake in some form of yukata-wearing escapade – especially when you feel the need to fully immerse in the culture of the country. And if you don’t already know, the traditional Japanese garment that comes in a myriad of colours and patterns is essentially a summer kimono women and girls wear.

While they were originally worn after a bath or to bed, they have since become a part of summer fashion whre it’s also worn to fireworks displays or summer festivals.

Well, now you don’t have to travel to the Far East just to get a hit out of donning the piece because Japanese retailer, Uniqlo has brought them right to our shores with a special collection. Featuring both retro and modern designs inspired by well known artists Yumeji Takehisa and Junichi Nakahara, there is bound to be one that’ll suit your fancy. For the uninitiated, Yumeji Takehisa was a master painter known for fusing Western forms with classic Japanese styles  in his work. Hence from his side of the collection, you’ll notice graceful roses, polka dots, chameleon plant flowers, among other patterns. Whereas Junichi Nakahara was a fashion designer and illustrator whose designs include traditional Japanese patterns such as plum blossoms and dahlias.

Retaining its authentic weave, the yukatas in this collection are also made with 100% cotton in order to deliver the exact feel and comfort of traditional yukatas. You don’t want to be battling the heat while wearing them after all.

So seeing that the Japanese summer festival, natsu matsuri, which is typically celebrated at the The Japanese School is a month away – on 22 August – perhaps this will give you all the more reason to get your very own yukata and head down to soak up the festivities in true Japanese fashion! And if you don’t know how to wear one, here’s a nifty guide.

This Uniqlo Yukata collection (SGD79.90 for women and SGD69.90 for girls) is available in limited quantities in Singapore, and is sold exclusively at ION Orchard, Changi Airport Terminal and online.

Don’t miss Uniqlo & Inès de la Fressange collaboration on Be Asia.
