To celebrate SG50, Rimowa collaborated with local personalities and artists to spin their creative fingers for an inaugural art exhibition.

Singaporeans are known to travel a fair bit and what better way to show your pride for the nation while in a foreign country than with a specially designed suitcase that carries all the elements of being Singaporean?

Enter the inaugural Rimowa X ART collaboration which features luggage designs by 12 homegrown renowned personalities, as well as up and coming creative individuals. The 12 celebrated names include Geoff Ang, Keith Png, Kevin Seah, Leon Foo, Rosalyn Lee and Willabelle Ong, Candice Phang, Colin Chen, Dee Chia, Ivan Kuek, Lee Wai Leng and Wang Yuhui. All of whom have worked their magic fingers to hatch up designs that reflects their personal sentiments towards Singapore, especially in the lead up to the Golden Jubilee celebration.

Presented on the iconic Rimowa Topas Multiwheel luggage, you can expect to see a whole spectrum of creativity that ranges from literal interpretations of our nation to understated and subtle designs. For instance, while multidisciplinary artist, Dee Chia covered her luggage with Peranakan shophouses, fashion photographer, Geoff Ang simply went with Singapore’s national colours, red and white. However, the devil is in the concept here. Geoff’s luggage is painted over with a thin white coat which scrapes off to reveal a permanent shade of red underneath with consistent use. Essentially, the transient white symbolises each journey and the permanent red represents Singapore as home.

Intrigued? We bet you are. From now till 30 July, you can head on down to the Mandarin Gallery store to view the creations up close and marvel at the ingenuity of it all. Who knows you might even want to wheel one away?

Designs by the six personalities will be available for sale at SGD5,000 each with all proceeds going towards Mercy Relief. Donors will enjoy 3 times tax exemption on income tax for 2015. For more information click here.
