Inspired by the first generation of skinheads in the 60s, Dr Martens launches a Spirit of 69 collection filled with just the right attitude.

The first generation of skinheads back in the 1960s sprung to attention not only for their close-cropped or shaven heads but also for their definitive sense of style – one that featured sharp, fitted tailoring with a inkling of rebellion and spunk.

By taking inspiration from the British subculture and working with brands who were associated in one way or another with the movement, Dr Martens brought to fruition the Spirit of ’69’ collection. After all, Dr Martens was the skinhead’s ideal footwear of choice.

The collection consists of Dr. Martens footwear, shirts from Brutus, Edwin Jeans and MA-1 flight jackets from Alpha Industries. In addition to that and as an ode to the relationship skinheads had with music, a collaborative record box bag from Dr. Martens and Trojan Records completes the range.

Throughout the entire collection, the skinhead’s meticulous attention to detail was apparent. Starting from the Dr Martens shoes where a more traditional biscuit-backed leather was used and colours were made precisely to match the earlier versions of the brand. Moving on to the clothing, early skinheads glorified the trim-fit shirts from Brutus, complete with a three-finger collar, double button dart vented sleeves and darts at the back for a well-tailored and sharp fit

Complementing the shirts skinheads wore were a pair of durable jeans and for this collection, Dr Martens brought in Edwin Jeans, that was supposedly favoured amongst a multitude of subcultures. Edwin Jeans created an updated version of the bleached jean style worn by skinheads during that time. Lastly by observing the same construction and details of the original MA-1 flight jacket from Alpha Industries, two styles were created for the Spirit of ’69’ collection, both come in striking yellow lining.

To complement the lineup, Mike Skinner from The Streets made an exceptional short film that delves into the working class movement and the diverse influences that spoke to UK’s non-conformist youth. Essentially, it’s safe to say this collection is remarkably exemplary of the style in that era.
