Get into the almost century-old shoe trend and find out how you can wear the style with a modern edge.

THE MARY JANE LEGACY

Mary Janes have come a long way. Seldom is there a shoe style that accompanies us from our toddler days well through our mature moments, but this particular strapped style is an exception. Sometimes under the notion of being reserved for schoolgirls and the occasional nun, we’re now seeing several reinventions of the iconic bar-strap footwear in an array of materials.

Popularisation of the shoe was first seen in the roaring 20s, where flapper girls wore them with glitzy fringe dresses and midi skirts. Twiggy was then seen parading in Mary Jane tap shoes during the 60s and although it remained largely unpopular for most of the decades ahead, the footwear eventually made its sexy catwalk comeback at fashion houses like Dior and Louis Vuitton.

HOW TO WEAR MARY JANES

To wear the trend, avoid anything too bulky and instead go for slim streamlined styles that will set you far away from the 5 year-old squeaky shoes stereotype. Pointed toe variations are usually best, as they lend a grown-up, formal flair that’s suited for the office and other dressy occasions. Go for sandals, flats or low heels for more casual affairs and opt for unique finishes for an on-trend feel.

Don’t be afraid to satisfy your inner magpie with fully glittered footwear like statement pairs from Miu Miu. If you’re into something more polished, then suede, leather and matte velvet will be your allies. Remember that heels are the main saviour for these shoes – stacked heels give it a modern look that marries demureness and edge, while slim stilettos are undeniably sexy.

To show off the statement bar-strap detail, wear your Mary Janes with cropped tailored pants, jeans, flowy midi skirts or even fitting ankle-length dresses. Highlighting the shoes will give a slimming effect to broad feet.

From suede to glitter to patent leather, shop the 25 styles in our gallery for the perfect pair to get you to the beach, a sleek evening event or the perfect smart casual attire for work.
