With summer hot on our heels, it’s time to learn how to wear our favourite colour this season!

Nothing screams summer quite as well as the bright and saturated primary colour, yellow. Yellow has earned itself chief colour status for this season as it epitomizes rolling mustard fields, flavourful citrus fruits, glorious sunshine and all things happy.

However, the colour is not as simple and carefree as the exterior suggests. It often gets tricky to work shades of yellow into your outfit – too bright, too mellow? More importantly, the wrong shade of yellow is notorious for making skin look patchy or unflatteringly tanned.

If you’ve got a pinkish undertone, your best bet is to work with warmer shades of yellow like mustard or an amalgamation of primary yellow and orange. Those will work to visually create a warmer outlook.

However, if you’re on the olive side of the continuum then opt for neon yellows, chartreuse and just any shade of yellow that has a vibrant outlook so as to compliment your warm skin tone. Darker complexions can easily pull off vibrant yellows as well; just think how radiant Lupita Nyong’o looked in that stunning J. Mendel dress.
Wearing yellow almost immediately requires undeniable depths of confidence to pull off. If a head-to-toe yellow combination is too strong for your taste then ease into the colour with yellow-hued accessories – from clutches to necklaces to shoes – or keep yellow to only one piece of apparel in our outfit (yellow skirts are our favourites!)
One point of contention though is to pair yellow with black – we don’t want to risk looking like walking bumblebees on the streets now do we?
