‘Yokan’ – never heard of it? Here’s your chance to try this traditional Japanese dessert in Singapore.

If you’re count yourself a Japanese food enthusiast, you’re probably familiar with the likes of mochi and matcha desserts. However, have you heard of or tried the Yokan? Well if you haven’t, here’s your chance: the first ever Yokan Collection will make its debut on our shores this October at the Singapore National Museum!

The Yokan is essentially a thick jelly dessert made with an agar and red bean paste, usually served as a block of individual slices (pictured above). Like its other dessert counterparts, it is available in varied versions: yokan can be sweetened with honey, sugar or brown sugar and may also contain nuts, fruits and beans. Although often described as a jelly, the consistency of Yokan is more true to a paste.

The Yokan dates back to as early as the 16th century and holds a cultural significance to the Japanese. In fact, it is actually a popular souvenir in many regions of Japan. Much loved by Japanese imperial families and Shogun in the past, the handmade confectionary of Yokan is as much a prized delicacy in Japan as the delicate high teas are to the Chinese.

The Yokan Collection – Singaporean Edition

Following its first debut in Paris last year, the Yokan Collection will arrive on our shores this October 28 and 29 at the Singapore National Museum. Ten Master Chefs, among which include acclaimed Master Wagasi Chef, Hiromori Uchida (above), have been specially flown from Japan for the showcase to demonstrate the art of making Yokan and illustrate its role in the Japanese way of life.

Browse the gallery above for a sneak peek into the Yokan Collection from the different yokan craft houses that will be presented here in October!
