Feeling down and don’t want to have to rely on expensive prescription medication to get back on track? Here are 5 Ayurvedic home remedies to help with common ailments such as headaches, stomach aches, the flu and more…

For when you have a headache:

The following two remedies are based on the ancient principles of Ayurveda, which is the science of healing and work naturally and non-invasively.

The first way to alleviate the effects of a bad headache is by making a glass of watermelon juice and mixing 1 tablespoon of sugar into it. Drink the entire glass immediately for instant relief. Another remedy is 2 tablespoons of cinnamon powder, which must be ground and mixed with water to form a paste. Apply the paste to your forehead and let cool and soothe.

For when you have a stomach ache:

The best remedy that comes to mind when thinking of stomach issues is Phyllium Seed Husks. This is a primarily Indian remedy and is also known as Isabgol. It works as a natural combatant to aid digestion and make passing waste through the digestive tract much easier. It is also good for cleansing the colon and easing the pain and effects of constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea and other types of stomach issues.

For when you have a toothache:

Lime is a fantastic toothache remedy. Because it is packed with vitamin C, it prevents tooth decay and helps to control its onset. If you’re suffering from what seems like the beginning of severe toothache and you want to quell the pain before going to the dentist, consume unpeeled lime. We know this may sound like a task and the sour taste might not be to your liking, but no pain no gain! And we guarantee, there’s a gain.

For when you have a case of dandruff:

You don’t want to be labeled the DDG (Dandruff Girl) at work or have an awkward situation of shedding scalp on a big date out, so we have the cure for you. This Ayurvedic remedy has worked wonders for Indian women for centuries over, so why not try it out for yourself?

Mix 3 teaspoons of coconut oil (you can get this at many supermarkets, not just Indian ones) and 1 teaspoon of amla (Indian gooseberry or Phyllanthus emblica) juice. Gently massage the scalp with this remedy everyday for a week.

If you find it hard to acquire those ingredients, an alternative is adding 10 drops of lemon juice to 1 egg white and beating it until fluffy. Apply this concoction to your hair for at least half an hour prior to washing your hair. Be sure to use a mild shampoo when employing these remedies.

For when you have the flu:

This drink works wonders for most people as it is both strong and extremely soothing.

Pour a capful of brandy into a glass or tea mug to 2 parts of hot water, or a small cup of green tea. Add a teaspoon of honey, cut up a small part of ginger and immerse it into the water or tea and add a wedge of lemon. This remedy will put your aching throat and the sniffles at ease. You should have this just once a day, preferably before bedtime.

Although strictly speaking, this is not an Ayurvedic remedy (as it involves the use of liquor) but is a great home remedy nonetheless. Employed on both adults and children alike – this concoction of brandy, honey, ginger, lemon and hot water or tea is a miracle worker.
