Alternative Medicine: Yoga and Tai-Chi help relieve joint pain

updated the 14 July 2015 à 18:34

Yoga and the Tai-chi are effective methods to restore the body’s flexibility and strength, in a gentle way. They are particularly useful to relieve joint pain, on the condition you respect your heart condition.

YOGA

HOW IT WORKS

When your joints feel a little rusty, you should not avoid practising sports but you should choose a suitable activity. In 2013, a study showed that 12 sessions of yoga improved the quality of life, and relieved pain and anxiety of young women suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. According to other studies, yoga also helps you to recover mobility when you suffer from chronic lumbago. Finally, the American School of Rheumatology advises practising Tai-chi, a slow, gentle martial art without physical contact, in cases of arthritis of the knee.

THE LIMITS

“We should not practice it in cases of acute inflammation, if the joint is red, hot and/or swollen,” specifies Daniel Kieffer, a Naturopath. Another case is inflammatory rheumatic diseases (rheumatoid polyarthritis or ankylosing spondylitis). At the same time, opt for some fruits and fresh vegetables, almonds, sesame and garlic, as they have anti-inflammatory properties.
