Brown sugar has a much healthier reputation than white sugar. But does the colour really have an impact on its composition and our well-being?

Both come from sugar cane or from sugar beets. More specifically, brown sugar doesn’t always come from sugar cane. If you want to buy sugar from sugar cane, be sure to check the packaging.

Is brown sugar richer in calcium?

The beets or cane are first ground into a juice, consisting of sugar, water, and impurities. This sugar is then cleansed. Brown sugar is indeed less cleansed than its white cousin, which explains its attractive colour and slightly different nutritional composition. Among these impurities are minerals like calcium. Nevertheless, it is present in such a tiny quantity that to enjoy any health benefits, a person would have to consume several kilos of the sugar per day. Consuming this much sugar would obviously be a total contradiction of good health. In brief, white or brown, choose according to your taste and be wary of marketing ploys.
