Diet: Dairy products – an important source of calcium

It is needless to eliminate dairy products from your daily food intake. On the contrary, it can be a very good nutritional ally, as confirmed by the experts.

In adults, it is unusual to be allergic to the proteins in cow’s milk. However, lactose intolerance tends to increase with age. The older we are, the less we produce lactase, which is the enzyme that digests the sugars in milk. The intolerance causes us to potentially suffer from stomach ache, bloating and diarrhea. While the problem typically arises from some types of milk products, this debate around dairy products convinces many people to stop eating yogurt and cheese entirely as well. In fact, people should not avoid yogurt or cheese because they contain little lactose, even not at all. And according to Nicolas Mathieu, hepato-gastroenterologist, most of us are able to tolerate 12g of lactose on a daily basis, or approximately 240 ml of milk. “Dairy products are our best source of calcium, essential to prevent osteoporosis, even in adulthood. Every day, we eliminate calcium that then must be replaced “, stresses dietitian Béatrice de Reynal.

As for cheese, some are low in lactose and not too calorific (Camembert, Brie, Munster). We suggest having one to two portions of cheese per day (30 to 60 g) plus one portion of yogurt. However, take it easy with Fromage Blanc (French-style fresh cheese that is similar to fromage frais and richer in lactose) and quick pastas (made with Emmenthal, Gouda, Tomme cheese) that are full of calories.
