In a century, the place of women in society has changed profoundly. How do women feel they change? Are they satisfied with this progress? Is feminism is still a struggle? The international organization of business services Mazars asked these questions to three generations of women around the world. Find out the results of this comparison study.

In the past century, women’s role in society has greatly evolved. How do women feel about these changes? The international organization of corporate services Mazars questioned three generations of women around the world. Here are the results of this study.

“The women’s place in society, the new communication tools and the new constantly connected generation make our societal plans evolve”, states the Director of the diversity of Mazars group. While it is well-known that the women’s participation in the labour market is the future of the economic development, it’s time to discover what they have to endure, what they denounce and what they dream about!”

For that purpose, Mazars and the UN Committee of Women led an investigation in 108 countries. More than 2000 women from the generations W (born from 1945 to 1960), X (born from 1961 to 1980) and Y (born from 1981 to 1995) answered an online quantitative questionnaire. Qualitative studies were also led. In the results 72% of the questioned women consider that feminism is still clearly a topical issue. But important generational differences were noticed. While feminism represents a fight for 37% of the W generation, it is essentially about a movement for 34% of the X generation. Generation Y is divided. A third thinks that it is a movement, another third sees it as a fight and the last third considers it as a philosophy. But they are all optimistic and 3 women in 4 consider that the feminism will evolve in a good way in the future.

Other interesting data: 63% of the women still consider childbirth as a constraint for their professional career. The work arena is still considered as a discriminating place. How can we counter it? In daily life management, 73 % of the women look for support and more involvement from their partner (husband, boyfriend). Then, they count on their employer (57%), before their family (42%).

What are the most important values for them? Freedom and respect (60%) were rated higher than justice (37%) and equality (34 %). Abortion, street harassment, ordinary sexism… Every threat that restrains them from being the masters of their own body recurs in these testimonies. Ambition received only 8% of the votes…
