With your boss, children or significant other, you tend to negotiate every day without noticing! Here are some tips to maximize your chances of success.

In a perfect world, we get what we want without having to ask for it, let alone negotiate with other people. In reality, especially in Singapore, we build relationships and trust before finally mustering the courage to negotiate with our superiors, potential business partners and clients to get our requests fulfilled.

According to the book When Cultures Collide by Richard D. Lewis, Singaporeans “soften up” to their peers, get to know them personally through recreational activities or casual meetings before eventually laying the cards out on the table and reveal their demands.

In other words, negotiating is a time-consuming process and it can be arduous. Think about asking your boss for a pay raise; it’s daunting, even for the best employees. Another instance would be negotiating with your kids and significant other without losing credibility or harming your relationships. Moreover, negotiation skills don’t come naturally to some.
