The Great Singapore Sale is upon us again and we’ve scoured some of the best deals in town along with a few tips on how to emerge a winner.

Singapore is home to an army of glistening malls along any available stretch of road – whether it’s on the main shopping belt that is Orchard Road or tucked away in the heartlands of the island such as Ang Mo Kio or as far flung as Boon Lay.

So to put it simply, shopping could be considered as an activity that’s ingrained in our culture. And perhaps that’s the very reason why we boast of hosting the Great Singapore Sale, which is an annual two month-long event egging retailers to slash prices and give huge discounts. Enticing no? After all, how could anyone say no to lower prices?

However, instead of lunging forward to bag everything remotely cheaper, here’s a quick guide on how to emerge from the sales a winner, rather than with a frighteningly lower bank balance.

1. Needs vs Wants

This may seem obvious but when the flashing red signs beckon, this is easier said than done. Always remember to only purchase what you absolutely need, rather than something you like but not really certain if it’s going to make your wardrobe better. Wants are short-lived for a reason and you don’t want that piling up in the back of your wardrobe either.

2. Avoid bargain racks

Retailers often dump clothing onto bargain racks to make them appear cheaper than they are or create an insatiable desire amongst consumers. Also bargain racks give the illusion of that being the only stock left, so if you miss out, you miss out. In actuality, there may be more waiting in the back room. So always sieve through the rack dutifully and only pick the pieces you need (point 1) and those that carry a worthy discount.

3. Leave credit cards at home

Here’s another one of those easier said than done habits. Trust us though, withdraw the amount that you’re willing to spend at the sales and if you only use that to shop, you won’t run the risk of happily swiping only to receive a shock at the end of the month. Your account balance doesn’t deserve it.

Now that you’re armed with the above, head to gallery above for just a couple of places that you could plan your GSS shopping routes around! Don’t forget to let us know what you managed to snag!
