Photographer Carla Richmond and writer Hanne Steen take a look at the heartbreak after a breakup. Their series of photos feature women (and one man) in a lot of pain for their ex.

Come on, put our egos aside and let’s face it: we also get nostalgic when sniffing the shirt of an ex. The smell brings us to the blessed ‘honeymoon’ time, where everything was fine. Unsurprising perhaps since scientific studies show that our bodies release a chemical – pheromones – i.e. that special smell which plays an important role in our attraction to each other.

There are even “pheromones parties” around the world where people try to meet their compatible half based on… smell! The chemistry between two people is therefore not a purely philosophical concept. This is what makes the images by photographer Carla Richmond, in collaboration with the writer Hanne Steen, through the “Lovers shirts” series especially strong and honest. They asked grieving people to testify after a breakup or a sudden disappearance of their lovers. An effective way to show how the memory remains strongly attached to a garment which belonged to someone we still cherish, even after hey’re gone.

The series is made of forty portraits, of which we present the most moving in the slideshow above.
