Shopping: Why do clothes make us so happy?

updated the 11 June 2014 à 22:56

Anyone who does not believe in the fact that a new piece of clothing can change her life can throw her new boots at us (especially if they are in black, size 38). It’s crazy, that power of a new piece of leather or chiffon!

Happiness is… sometimes as simple as a pair of new skinny jeans. Why do we deprive ourselves of it?

In the front displays of stores, we see the beautiful legs of Alessandra Ambrossio, the perfect smile of Cara Delevingne, and the casual elegance of the models who are the face of our favourite luxury brands. That which we seek is thus less, then, a piece of clothing as it is the search for an ideal self, and instant gratification and consolation to any frustration (a missed promotion that was expected, the car was refusing to work, a dinner meeting was cancelled…).

According to personal stylist and blogger Isabelle Thomas*, “seeing a different you in the dressing room is a pleasure which disappears once one home if you expect fashion to be anything other than a game.” The watchful eye of the personal shopper or saleswoman echoes that of our mother and the ideal image of femininity she passed down to us.

Seducing that gorgeous man at your lunch place? That comes after. Fashion is the real primary objective of women.
