6 Reasons to pay attention to your skin instead of covering it with makeup

Makeup may be good at hiding all those pesky scars and dark spots, but it is only a temporary solution.

1. Skin care helps you to understand your skin better

Every girl who watches makeup videos on YouTube knows deep inside that makeup is not the solution for flawless skin. Dabbing powder on oily areas of your skin and using a matte finish foundation for fear of having a face that shines will certainly help you look fabulous… but only while it lasts. You see, it’s great to have powder to mattify your oily T-zone or slap a full-coverage foundation to hide your scars, but isn’t it better to make your face less problematic in the first place? By taking care of your skin with suitable skin products, it can stabilise your skin condition and before you know it, you can wave goodbye to makeup entirely!

2. Your skin is the window to your health

It has been scientifically proven that having acne on certain areas of your face will show you which part of your body is unhealthy, which is why there is that classic saying: “your skin is the window to your health”. Your facial condition is a reflection of your overall health and wellbeing. You sure wouldn’t want to clog your pores even more with thick coats of makeup daily, causing your sensitive skin to be aggravated further. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on that designer skincare product – perhaps even a ten-dollar drugstore or pharmacy product may prove to be more suitable for your skin. Every skin condition is different and it’s important to recognise and take note of what works and what doesn’t. If you are unsure, consult a dermatologist. There is no proven correlation between overly expensive skin products and their efficacy.

3. Your skin ages faster without proper care

Just like a stalk of roses, without frequent care and water, it will wilt and die. Properly caring for your skin will not only improve your skin condition but also prevent it from aging too fast. For example, one of the biggest enemies of our skin is the sun. By applying sunscreen or moisturisers with adequate SPF protection, you will protect your skin from the harmful UV rays and prevent premature aging.

4. Makeup only enhances, not change

You can cover up that new red pimple, but you cannot get rid of that little raised bump. There is literally no magic you can use, not even makeup, to erase bumps. Making sure you have smooth, even, clear skin underneath is important. Working towards providing a smooth canvas for your beauty products, you’d be sure to rock any look, even without having to smother your complexion with layers of foundation.

5. You can reduce the amount of makeup that you use

Ask any girl you know, one of the most liberating feelings is to go out in public without makeup and still feel fabulous. Being able to hide your flaws with makeup and feel instantly like a goddess is definitely a good feeling, but we have better advice for you: getting rid of skin your problems completely should be the first step. The right skincare products, a proper diet, and good sleeping habits can help your skin heal faster and keep breakouts at bay. In other words, with lesser acne scars, hyperpigmentation and dark eye circles, you will naturally apply less makeup, reducing the amount of money and time you invest at the makeup store. Wouldn’t you rather use that money for a recharging fitness package or a relaxing spa session?

6. Makeup is temporary, your skin is forever

Makeup is an instant problem-solver, but its magic doesn’t last forever. When we remove all of that makeup at the end of the day, we’re left with our own natural skin. And that’s the skin you should embrace, protect and care for. Skin improvements don’t happen overnight. A good skin routine may be time-consuming, but it sure is worth it. It is nearly impossible to start applying quality toners and moisturisers tonight and expect your skin to look like Cara Delevingne’s the next day, but your skin is worth that investment, time and effort because your skin is forever.
