10 Creative ways to decorate your children’s bedroom

Pick a theme
It’s tempting to go wild and start painting immediately. But this space is going to be the wonderland for your child— so consider the space available and who your child is. If your child likes to roam the seven seas in search of treasures, try incorporating nautical themes with a lifebuoy hanging on the walls. Die-hard fan of unicorns and the sparkly world of princesses and fairies? How about a beautiful unicorn wall head mount? You can even get them to paint the horn their favourite colours, so they’ll feel connected to the room!

But still make it uniquely theirs!
A room is much more than a place for your child to retreat to come night time. It is the space where their dreams grow: where they fight the nasty dragons and where they float in the sky with colourful little ponies. Instead of giving them a room that they can see online, give it that little oomph that makes it theirs. Consider highlighting unique themes they love. Even if a castle isn’t typically bright orange, they will appreciate the extra effort. Maybe they love cooking: consider having a small playroom within their room, where they can whip up their dishes that is Michelin-star worthy.

Accents: more than just words
When you’re stuck, consider making a wall an accent wall, with a bright or glamorous wallpaper contrasted with the complementary colours of the remaining walls. This draws focus and brings direction to the room, so it doesn’t get overly hectic in the grand scheme of things.

Go sky-high
Don’t be limited by the floor and the walls! Why not hang things up and decorate their skies? While there’s usually a fan taking up prominent real-estate, pennant banners and DIY clouds are great alternatives to spice up the often-ignored space up above. Alternatively, in Singapore where that might not be as feasible, choose interesting and unique ceiling fans with lights to act as the centrepiece.

Wall, wall, wall.
Consider adorning the wall with much more than just paints, even if that is a very valid option. Their initials are often a good idea (and a fun activity to DIY over the weekend with your girlfriends), so they can learn how to read and spell their name whilst growing, but the options are endless. Inspirational quotes can lead your child down the right path and wall decals are a fun and easy way to jazz things up.

Say hello to sunshine
Make use of Singapore’s sunny weather by having a big window to let plenty of natural light in. Though a child is certainly not a plant, having enough light is important for a growing child. For infants, for example, getting exposed to natural light shifts their circadian rhythm (i.e. body clock), so they’ll no longer wake you up at ungodly hours. Or, at least, not so much anyway. Additionally, consider adding a reading area for the older child facing the windows (keep it closed or install window grills).

But close it up for sleep
But, when it comes to their final goodnight, after the invigorating tale of their adventures, consider investing in a good heavy duty nights-out blind so their rest would not be disturbed. After a long day, when they have finally wound down, the last thing any parent would want is to have their child up and running again — especially when work is starting in two hours.

Give it room to grow
One day, your child is crawling on the floor, and the next, they’re off to university. People have said time flies when you’re having fun, but they forget to mention how quickly life speeds up when you are with a child. Enjoy the little moments with your little ones, and make sure their room can grow with them. Instead of choosing colours that would be so passé when they reach puberty, opt for neutral shades with bright highlights to retain that youthful vibe without being overly saturated for the teenage angst. Bonus points for not having to completely rehaul the room every four years!

Make it into a gallery
When your fridge door finally runs out of space for your kid's drawings, take down a few of their best pieces, have them perhaps sign their work, and frame it up nicely on a wall. Maybe have a day where you and your family can make a big masterpiece to act as the focus, with all their other works spread around it. And, when they have even more, consider placing pieces behind one another, secured with the frame backing. Storage space that will never bend that Picasso-quality work! And even if your child isn’t old enough to hold a pencil, try putting in stock images or family photos that will brighten up the room.

Once you’re done with the room, it’s easy to end things there. After all, you’ve probably spent way too long designing and then seeing the designs come to life and you’re tired. Don’t worry, it’s almost the end. Consider extending the design to the bathroom to make showertime more fun. It doesn’t have to be as complicated but a little nod to their bedroom design would make the experience more enchanting for them. Plus, they will no longer complain about how they would bathe ‘in five minutes’, only to never make their way in because of how awesome their room has become.
