It can become quite the headache for many who have never travelling alone to finally embark on that lone adventure. So before you do, be sure to keep the following tips in mind and pack the necessary items to ensure your trip will be as smooth as it can get.

Tips to staying safe:

– Avoid situations where you may find yourself alone with a man. Team up with other travellers to share a taxi ride or tour and never let a man (including hotel staff) into your hotel room.

– Avoid crowded buses where you are more likely to get hassled. If can’t avoid travelling on a busy bus, keep your arms folded in front of you and get a seat near the driver. If possible travel with an acquaintance.

– Don’t let people know you are a solo female traveller. Cook up a story that one of your friends is arriving soon or pretend to be married.

– Always be aware of your surroundings and the people around you especially at night or in secluded areas. If you are out at night, stay in well-lit areas and avoid alleys.

– Be careful of your personal belongings. The main crime in Asian countries is theft. Even bag snatching is a form of street crime, so carry your bag close to your body, wear a secure day bag when you are out.

What to pack:

Phrasebook

Even though you can probably navigate without the local language, it will be wise to carry a phrasebook. Learning a few local phrases for politeness and courtesy will come in handy.

Clothing

Although there is no strict dress code, some areas are more conservative than others. Excessively skimpy clothes will only attract the wrong kind of attention – keep the bikinis and short shorts for the beach.

When visiting a temple or a more traditional rural area, it’s advisable to wear long, loose trousers or skirts and a T-shirt. Observe the locals and dress a bit more conservatively.

Essentials

Do keep loo roll, sanitizer, medication for upset tummies, insect repellent and feminine hygiene products. It will be difficult to obtain them especially if you are backpacking.

Money belt

Pack a secure money belt (to wear under your clothes) and a change purse to keep any cards or large amounts of cash. Keep enough petty cash for the day in the purse.

This will be useful in crowded places where you can hand over a change purse instead of giving everything away.
