Head over to Buka Island, Kimbe Bay, Blanche Bay and Panasia Island, just to name a few, to soak in untainted sparkling blue waters. If snorkeling or diving sounds right up your alley, then there’s no better place to do that. To describe the coral reef system here as colourful would be an understatement!

Papua New Guinea is nature at its best
We can’t emphasise enough how diverse the natural ecosystem here is. The country is gifted with lush fjords, rivers, untouched rainforests, mountains, thick mangrove forests apart from beaches. And hidden in these marvelous landscapes are a plethora of wildlife including birds-of-paradise. Quick fact: Papua New Guinea is also the only place in the world where you can find the world’s largest butterfly known as Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing.

Meet the indigenous tribes
Did you know that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of tribes in Papua New Guinea - each with their own language and traditions? A latest study by BBC shows that about 80% of these tribes still live in thick jungles with little to no modern-world contact! We think that a better (and safer) option to meet them is by visiting cultural centres scattered across various regions in the country. Drop by at the Enga Take Anda Cultural Centre, for instance, to learn more about the Engan culture. Alternatively, you can get in touch with tour operators who know the land well and will ensure your safety.

The people are genuinely nice
What’s really interesting about the locals here is that they are so amiable. If you are lucky to find the right people, they will even invite you to their homes to show you their village lifestyle, traditions, and most importantly, their food! But as with any other place, travelers should always exercise their judgement and street-smarts in any situation.

Teeming local markets
When traveling, visiting local markets is an activity that must never be skipped. This is because there’s no better place to bask in local culture than at a public market. Papua New Guinea’s thriving, chaotic markets are full of local food, fresh produce (like sago, sweet corn, and exotic fruits), crafts, trinkets and so much more. Plus, it’s way cheaper to shop at places like these.

For the history buffs: Discover traces of World War II
Papua New Guinea has certainly had its share of struggle, especially during the Second World War when the Japanese and the Allies fought here. To this day, you will find ammunition, plane wrecks, as well as the well-known Kokoda Trail which was instrumental during the war. The 96-kilometre track is only accessible by foot. Worry not, for the mind-blowing scenery and intriguing war stories along the way will keep you occupied during the long trek.
