Do you really need a makeup base?

You might just want to include this additional step in your makeup routine for a flawless yet long-lasting effect.
Makeup bases or primers - We have all heard about them but do we really need to include an additional step into our beauty routines? With time being a constraint, can you do without a base?
If you find yourself dealing with noticeable large pores, streaks of foundation, redness around your nasal folds, chances are your foundation (be it powder, cushion or cream) is not sitting well on your skin. The art of makeup has a lot to do with the chemistry of your skin. A foundation that may seem flawless on someone else might not yield the same results on your skin.
Most of these 'makeup mishaps' can be avoided by including one simple step to your routine: applying primer.
WHAT IS A PRIMER?
What exactly is a primer? Think of a primer as a glue. A glue that would help to create a tacky base for your makeup to sit on longer. It is not just any other glue but a magical one because most primers are infused with ingredients which help to smooth, conceal and blur your imperfections.
Most primers started off being silicone-based and this one ingredient is known for its smoothing effects. Adding a primer helps to smooth any fine lines, wrinkles and even reduces the appearance of large pores. All of which contributes to a smooth canvas being achieved. It makes your foundation or any face product glide on like a dream.
Fast forward and we are in the company of many types of makeup bases or primers these days. From mattifying, colour-correcting and hydrating, the list is endless and you will be able to find a base to suit your skin type.
APPLICATION:
A makeup base should always be applied after your skincare routine (i.e. moisturizer, etc)
The best way to apply any makeup base especially one with a consistency like a silicon-based primer is to use beauty's best tool - your fingers!
Gently squeeze out a pea sized amount (you do not want too much product) and rub it in between your fingers. The heat between your fingers will help to melt the product just a tad bit, making application much easier. Concentrate the product more on your T-Zone and massage the product onto your skin to circulate the blood underneath.
Once you have applied the product, wait 30 seconds to a minute before going in with your face product. You do not want to immediately apply any product because it is important to let the effects of the primer sink in. You will find that your foundation applies with lesser streaks and gives a more even coverage.
HOW DO I CHOOSE A PRIMER?
To choose a suitable primer, first consider what are your skin concerns. If oil-control is your concern, opt for a mattifying primer. Individuals with acne or rosacea can consider investing in a green-colored primer to combat the redness while those who are looking at brightening their skin tones can go for a primer or makeup base with pink undertones.
A well prepped base will add to the longevity of your makeup. Do check out the gallery up top for our favourite picks and try them out to help your makeup go on smoother.
