This simple grain may be Asia’s best kept secret.

Rice – we are familiar with it as a staple in our diet, but did you know it can also be used as a beauty ingredient? Rice has been used in the skincare routine of many women, especially Japanese women, for centuries now. It is believed that rice serves as a gentle exfoliant and can be used to brighten and add a glow to your skin.

Rice water for skin

Coarse rice water can be used on all skin types and works by first removing your dead skin cells. Subsequently, use filtered rice water as a toner each day to help soften and brighten your skin twice a day. Apart from brightening your skin, rice water is highly effective at shrinking your pores, adding shine to your hair, and even combating eczema thanks to the soothing and calming starch component in the grain.

Homemade hair mask

If you are planning to prepare a homemade hair mask, pour rice water on your scalp and hair and massage it. Ensure that your hair is fully covered with the mixture and wrap your hair into a knot. Allow the mixture to sit in your hair for 20 minutes before rinsing it off with shampoo and applying conditioner. You will notice that your hair is softer and gives off a shiny appearance almost instantly.

Preparing rice water on a daily basis can be a little tedious and might take up a lot of your time, but fret not – there are several beauty products out there that have been infused with rice water as an active ingredient. Head over to the gallery above for our pick of the best rice water beauty products. Achieving glowing skin has never been easier.
