It’s time to be a rebel in the beauty department and give these ‘rules’ the boot.

Every new beauty season sees the passing of old trends but some trends tend to overstay even when they’re less than welcomed. You should be allowed to tweak the ways of makeup to suit your needs. There is never a right or wrong but only guidelines which are constantly changing. If blue eye shadow is your thing, go ahead and rock it – just be sure to blend it well.

Rules exist to be broken so here are 5 beauty ‘rules’ that absolutely need to go.

BANGS AREN’T FOR CURLY HAIR

This is one rule that needs to be broken. Gone are the days of pairing straight sleek hair with perfectly cut bangs. Rock those curls with straight cut or layered bangs depending on your face shape. If Taylor Swift can rock this look, so can we.

MAKEUP BRUSHES ARE THE BEST TOOLS OUT THERE

While that is partly true, it is not to be strictly followed.  The season of embracing your natural skin and imperfections is in so to achieve a natural result, use your fingers, especially your ring finger (as that uses the least pressure), to apply your cream shadows and even foundation. Use patting motions to mimic the action of a buffing brush.

MATCH YOUR HAIR AND EYEBROW COLOUR

Break the rule of matching your hair and eyebrow colour and opt for a shade darker to add definition to your eyes. This draws more attention to your features. A quick and easy way to do so is to tint your eyebrows or use a brow mascara, so as to get a natural finish that does not look out of place.

WHITE EYELINER BRIGHTENS YOUR EYES

When this trend was first seen on the runway, many went gaga over it and picked up the nearest white eyeliner they could find to fill in their waterline and inner corners. While the white liner look appears impressive in an advertisement spread, it might be too harsh for everyday wear. It’s time to break this trend and opt for the nude liner instead.

FROSTED LIPS ARE SO 90s

This rule so needs to go. Did someone not inform the rule makers that the 90s are back? With mauves and coffee brown shades making a comeback, the frosted lip was not going to be left behind. Take inspiration from the runway and complete your bronze makeup look with a frosted lip.

So there you have it! Be a rebel and break these 5 beauty rules which need to be given the boot. Head over to the gallery up top for a round up of ways to embrace the alternative beauty looks.
