It’s important to know exactly what lip colour complements your skin tone for any occasion, from a daily, natural look to one that will wow your colleagues at a dinner and dance.

All of us probably already own a go-to lipstick that accentuates our lips without looking too bold; something that we use on an everyday basis. And then we also have those bright reds or pinks that we wear on special occasions. We think the colours look great on us, but do they really suit our skin tone and the looks we want to create? Here are some guidelines to help you discover the lip colours that you should be adorning, based on the occasion and the look you’re going for.

For an everyday, natural appearance

Simply find a lipstick that is one to two shades darker than your natural lip colour. One way you can test this is by applying the lipstick only on your bottom lip, and comparing the colour with that of your upper lip. Darker, matte shades may cause your lips to appear thinner, while lighter, glossy lipsticks help to plump up your lips.

For bold red, luscious lips

Sometimes, a classic red lip is all that we need to brighten up our day. The right red highly depends on your skin colour and complexion. For example, pinkish reds work well on fair skin, while bright reds complement tan and olive skin. However, this doesn’t mean that people with fairer complexions cannot wear bright red lipstick. It simply means that the colour will appear to pop more against their skin.

Take note of hair and make-up

The colour of your hair and eyeshadow can greatly affect how well a lip colour looks on you as well. Make sure these colours blend well together if you don’t want to throw off the look you’ve been working so hard for.
