Primer isn’t just for your base – mixing it with the right products can give you multiple new concoctions you’ll love! Take a look to find out how.

We all know what a primer is: it holds your makeup in place and helps it to last all day on your skin, eyes and lips. It’s always the ‘Step 0’ to a long-lasting makeup routine, with makeup companies recently inventing one for every purpose. In addition to these properties, this often silicone-based, translucent product can actually be quite the multitasker.

Read on to find out how you can max out your primer usage and turn it into 5 new products (or maybe more!).

LIGHT COVERAGE FOUNDATION

Using the same principles of a tinted moisturiser, mixing some primer with your favourite foundation will give you lasting power all day. It will also turn it into a lighter coverage foundation, for those warmer days when you want some coverage but don’t want it to melt off your skin.

VIBRANT EYESHADOW

We know of the classic primer-before-eyeshadow trick, but what about mixing the two and turning it into a gel with a dry-matte formula? Use a makeup spatula or a small spoon to scrape off some of your desired eyeshadow and mix it well with a small drop of primer on the back of your hand, with a brush or your ring finger. The result will be a bright gel texture, which you can pat directly onto your lids for great colour payoff.

EYELINER

The smallest amount of primer mixed with jet-black eyeshadow will give you a long-lasting, smudge-proof eyeliner that won’t budge for hours. As with the previous method, swirl the powder eyeshadow into a very small drop of primer with an angled brush, and watch it glide smoothly onto your lids.

‘CREAM’ HIGHLIGHTER

Powder highlighters can sometimes look harsh and tend to sit on the skin unnaturally. If you’re not familiar with cream highlighters, they are often more subtle and look like a natural glow that shines through your makeup without coming off as overdone. Mix primer with a powder highlighter the same way you would with eyeshadow, and pat on lightly over your cheekbones, nose bridge, cupid’s bow and chin.

‘CREAM’ BLUSH

Create a natural flush on your cheeks with a cream blush. Make your own by adopting the same powder-and-primer technique, and pat onto the apples of your cheeks for a great everyday look that will last for hours without touch ups.

Primer can basically act as your mixing medium for any powder, cream and liquid products. A point to note is that this works best if your primer is a clear, non-tinted one, so do bear that in mind.

Now knock yourself out and get to creating some new formulas!
