The famous American fashion designer has lost his battle with cancer. We take a look back at his wonderful career of beautiful designs.

The famous American fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, passed away on Monday, at age 82 as the result of cancer, and with this loss, comes the end of an entire fashion era.

The story of the man, who made a name for himself with enchanting fairy tale creations, began in Madrid.

After having completed several sketches, de la Renta was spotted by the American Ambassador’s wife in Spain. In 1956, she ordered one of his dresses which her daughter wore to her debutante ball.

Oscar de la Renta was already under an auspicious star because the young woman made the cover of Life Magazine. It was beautiful exposure for the designer, whose career was officially launched.

An Obvious Success

Lanvin, Elizabeth Arden, Balmain – Oscar de la Renta created his masterpieces for so many Maison de Couture in his career, and his success propelled him to the top of the elite New York society, for which he created uncountable Romanesque dresses.

He was the favourite of Anna Wintour and a close friend of Hillary Clinton. He had chosen his successor, Peter Copping, just one week before his death.

De la Renta was the previous designer of the Nina Ricci Maison (replaced by Guillaume Henry de Carven), and had to ensure the long-term existence of his emblematic Maison.

One month ago, the fashion industry celebrated the creativity of the designer. During this fascinating fashion show in New York, everyone swooned over the bridal dress in embroidered tulle that was made for Amal Alamuddin, wife of famous actor George Clooney.

As a tribute to the great man, let’s take a look at his career full of memorable fashion shows and fascinating encounters.
