Marni toned down the whimsy and introduced more pragmatism into the Pre-Fall pieces, allowing the Marni woman to take down erratic temperatures with ease

Seemingly designed to dominate, the Marni Pre-Fall 2014 collection is strewn with tough masculine elements alongside robust textures and volumes to supposedly take on the changing seasons with furor.
Functionality and pragmatism in dressing was the main message reverberating throughout this collection. By answering the age-old question of appropriate dressing, Consuelo Castiglioni has given woman a way out to navigating erratic temperatures and zip codes. Barely any leg was bared with hemlines mostly kept to full or mid-calf while asymmetrical godets gave an architectural flair to skirts and dresses.

It was evident that fur and sheepskin took centerstage in this collection (sheepskin bermudas anyone?) but lightweight plissé silks or shorter length dresses did make a rather dainty peek-a-boo appearance underneath heavier and sturdier layers. For the most part though, the pieces screamed more pre-winter than pre-fall but the versatility of layers indubitably allows for a change in styling, to suit the weather wherever you’re at.

The colour palette remained largely neutral and muted in a sea of charcoal, midnight blues, creams and dark brown tones. Hence, in a bid to evoke strokes of femininity, expect cinched in waists, flippy skirts and a mélange of printed dresses in a riot of colours – Marni’s whimsical side did shine through after all.

Similarly, the Pre-Fall collection video features a static roll of key pieces thoughtfully set against striking and fantasy-like outsider art.

Here’s another taste to the Marni house with the Fall Winter 2014 runway show.

The Marni Pre-Fall 2014 collection is now available at Club21 stores.
