From a symbol of rebellion in the past, to a fashion staple on runways and in wardrobes now – Here’s how to style this timeless print.

Arguably one of the longest standing prints ever known to the fashion world, Tartan has evolved an infinite amount of times ever since it was revolutionized in the 18th century – not that we’re complaining of course.

From tartan kilt skirts worn by Scottish soldiers in the past to pencil skirts, flannel shirts and oversized mohair coats seen in present day street wear, and not forgetting its dominance on the Fall 2013 runway especially from Ralph Lauren and Vivienne Westwood, tartan has clearly proven itself to be fashion staple and a must-have in every wardrobe.

Therein the gridiron pattern lies a versatility like no other, enabling it to transcend through centuries and being reinvented with elements of seasonal trends – needless to say, we’ve been loving every single adaptation of this timeless print ever since it began as a symbol of rebellion in 1765.

For its comeback in Fall/Winter 2014, there are 5 possible ways of incorporating tartan into your ensemble:

Casual off-duty: Highly favoured by celebrities, this look comprises of a loose basic top, a pair of distressed jeans and trusty ol’ Chuck Taylors, made complete by tying a tartan shirt across your waist. Accessories? A Starbucks cup.

Print on print: If just tartan is too tame for the print animal in you, go bold contrasting it against possible prints such as florals, animal prints, monochromatic checks, or gold baroque motifs and the list goes on and on. Balance the boisterous prints in your ensemble with accessories, shoes and bags of just a solid colour.

Sartorial retro: Downsize the tartan print for a smarter look and opt for micro-tartan printed blazer and pants to nail the sartorial game. Suspenders are a must, and Clubmasters? Goes without saying.

Grunge: If a match made in heaven like apple and cinnamon were to have a successor, it would definitely be leather and tartan. These two elements make for the perfect grunge look and Vivienne Westwood might just be the queen of them. Throw on a leather jacket over a cropped band tee and tartan pants with Chelsea boots and finish the look with some studded gloves and metal chains.

Preppy school girl: Simply tuck a crisp white shirt – with a bow tie already in place – into a pleated tartan mini skirt over black stockings and pumps and you’re on your way to become the next Blair Waldorf. Now its time to conquer the Upper East Side.
