2018 Michelin Bib Gourmand: Char kway teow, fish head curry & more Singaporean eateries get recognised

A total of 50 Singaporean establishments was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand this year – a list with a significant hawker presence. Did your favourites make the list?

It’s that time of the year again – where restaurants get dusted with that coveted Michelin-approved dust.

The 2018 Michelin Bib Gourmand awards, announced this morning, has revealed a total of 50 Singaporean eateries being awarded in this year’s edition – a leap from the 38 recipients last year.

The 2018 list includes the debut of 17 new establishments, with two popular local restaurants finally being recognised. Muthu’s Curry, known for its flavourful fish head curry, and hipster spot  The Coconut Club, which dishes out an elevated take on the classic Nasi Lemak, both join the list for the first time this year.

Hawker foods also take the spotlight. Of the 50 recipients, 28 of them can be found in our hawker centres. Among them include Chai Chuan Tou Yang Rou Tang (at Bukit Merah View Food Centre), whose piping bowls of savoury mutton soup earns it snaking queues daily.

Two Char Kway Teow establishments have also made its debut on the list (finally)! The Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow (at Old Airport Road) and Outram Park Fried Kway Teow (at Hong Lim Market and Food Center) were awarded the Bib Gourmand distinctions, giving this quintessentially Singaporean dish the overdue Michelin approval it deserves.

The Bib Gourmand award, which first launched in 1997, recognises both restaurants and street food establishments shortlisted by Michelin inspectors for offering quality cuisines at affordable prices (i.e. no more than SGD45).

The number of Michelin Bib awardees this year is certainly a testament to our dynamic local food scene, from our contemporary restaurants to the much-loved hawker stalls dishing out generations-old recipes.
