Here’s the nutritional lowdown on the mid-autumn delicacy we all love.

With the Mid-Autumn festival just around the corner, it is time to brace ourselves for the onslaught of lanterns and yes – delectable mooncakes. These traditional Chinese delicacies are a huge part of the Mid-Autumn festivities. Unfortunately, with its high caloric and fat content, this doesn’t change the inevitable truth that mooncakes aren’t exactly the most nutritious bites on the health spectrum.

Curious to know what fat and caloric content are hiding in your favourite mooncakes? Browse the gallery above! However, if you’re aren’t willing to give up those decadent mooncakes just yet (which we fully understand), do take note of the following tips to embrace the festive season on a healthier note.

HEALTH TIPS TO NOTE:

1. Check the shelf life of mooncakes

The longer the shelf life, the more preservatives and artificial flavourings added. Opt for mooncakes with a shorter shelf life as decreasing your trans fat consumption will help you in the long run

2. Check the label

Be on the lookout for ingredients like the aforementioned artificial flavourings and preservatives. It would be wise to check out the sodium and sugar content as well because those ingredients will certainly do your waistline no good.

3. Portions are important – share!

Would you believe that a quarter slice of mooncake contains an alarming 120mg of cholesterol! If that hasn’t deterred you, did we mention that some mooncakes can amount to up to 1000 calories – which is the equivalent of two full meals! The recommended intake would be an eighth of a mooncake each day. Try sharing one of these mid-autumn treats with your family and friends instead of chowing one down yourself. Your heart will thank you.

4. Squeeze in a little exercise

Try swimming laps, play a game of tennis or even taking your dog for a walk – there are a variety of quick ways to burn off those calories. Amping up that heartbeat is a surefire way to shed those pesky pounds.
