“Should I insert a smiley here?” and “Is this joke appropriate?” are two of the killer questions we contemplate before sending a text. The stakes are high when sending a text after the first date, so watch out!

According to a survey by TNS Sofres, a body of research on marketing and public opinion, 65% of Meetic users who responded admitted that the content of the message received after a date could deter their views on the other person. 43% of the single respondents take less than 10 minutes to send a text message when keeping in touch, but 25% of them rack their brains for up to 20 minutes for other texts. The impatient ones who send their texts right away make up 10% of the participants while the majority, standing at 59%, tends to overthink and wait an hour or even until the next morning to hit send.

What are the crippling errors?

1) Spelling (45%)
2) SMS language “how r u” (33%)
3) One-word messages (this includes “K”) (31%)
4) The simple “xoxo” or “kiss-kiss” (20%)
5) Abbreviations and acronyms, most popular being LOL (12%)

In conclusion, it is better to be sober when you text considering there is an actual list of things to avoid in what is a seemingly innocent, harmless text.

If you are having your first date with someone this Valentine’s Day, apparently the safest option according to the survey is to text him something along the lines of “Great to meet you today.” Simple and straightforward.
