Rosehip oil is fast becoming a beauty staple that many women swear by. You might’ve first heard about this oil when former Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr disclosed it as the secret ingredient to her enviably radiant complexion. A visit to any department store here will have you realise that the beauty shelves is not short of rosehip oil skincare – even our local Singaporean pharmacies are now well-stocked with organic skincare infused with this oil like Essano. But what is rosehip oil?

Rosehip oil is actually harvested from the seeds of rose bushes that predominantly grow in Chile, with the oil extracted through a cold-press extraction. This delicate oil is rich in skin-loving constituents great for your skin: vitamins (E, C, B and A), and antioxidants and essential fatty acids. Here are some of the key benefits this oil can offer you:

1. Light and non-greasy

Don’t let the word ‘oil’ put you off – unlike heavier oils like shea butter and jojoba oil, rosehip seed oil is lightweight and absorbs into the skin easily. Dermatologists and skincare experts recommend using it as a supplement to your lotions and creams, which will help to nourish your skin and mitigate the damaging effects of the environment on it. This is definitely the oil for all skin types – dry, normal, combination, and even oily!

2. Treats acne, acne scars, and eczema

The essential fatty acids found in rosehip oil goes a long way in soothing and relieving dry skin and itchiness. Despite its lightweight texture as an oil, it is deeply moisturizing and can greatly aid in removing redness and irritation from your skin. Some experts also believe that rosehip oil could be a possible natural treatment for facial rosacea.

3. Renews skin

Rosehip oil is rich in skin-loving and skin rejuvenating properties like vitamin C and lycopene, which repairs your skin’s surface, restore its elasticity and also protects it against the aging effect of the sun and environmental pollution that can cause wrinkles to your skin. Who needs Botox or fillers?

4. Anti-aging and stimulates collagen production

The antioxidants in rosehip oil, and its ability to penetrate into deeper layers of the skin due its vitamin A content, makes it a great anti-aging product for your skin. In addition, its vitamin C antioxidants stimulate collagen production, leaving your skin smoother, younger-looking and more supple. Vitamin A also improves your skin’s moisture levels and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Need we say more?

5. Photo-aging protection

The UV rays of the sun can damage your skin and accelerate its aging process, resulting in spots, wrinkles and skin pigmentation issues (horror!). The skin-protecting properties in rosehip oil combat this potential damage from the sun. The antixodants combat free radicals and vitamin A and essential fatty acids in the oil helps improve skin tone, texture and pigmentation.
