You probably know world-renowned poets like Shakespeare and Wordsworth, but what about talents a little closer to home?

“Poetry is the rhythmical creation of beauty in words.” – Edgar Allan Poe

Poetry is said to be the anchor of literature and, to many, nourishment for the soul. It acts as a language by itself, helping people express themselves in ways they otherwise cannot. For some, poetry is a form of leisure, a way of art that brings them closer to other like-minded people. For others, poetry is their life, something they rely on every day and cannot do without.

We’re constantly being exposed to poetry, in school, on advertisements and in songs. It undoubtedly adds colour, meaning and thought to our lives. Chances are, you probably know a name or two in the international poetry scene, such as Robert Frost and E. E. Cummings, the people who have introduced the beauty of this art form to the world. But, are you familiar with names like Poesy Liang and Usman Awang, the artists who bring the meaning of poetry a little closer to home?

Head up to our gallery for a little bit of trivia you need to know about these 7 local poets, the lyrical talents of our very own Malaysia.
