Lights Out: H&M takes Earth Hour seriously, and you can join in too

Here’s what we love about H&M.

It seems the brand hasn’t lost any of its staunch focus on making the world a greener place. From sustainable clothing (as seen in their Conscious Exclusive collections) to on-going recycling efforts, H&M has always been proud of its mission to incite change in the fashion industry toward a more eco-friendly future. This weekend, on 25 March, H&M will be taking part in the Earth Hour movement by shutting off all non-essential lights in their stores and facilities from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

This means about 70% of the lightnings, including window display lights and facade screens, will be turned off for 60 minutes – only lights used for safety and technical reasons will remain on. As reiterated by Fredrik Famm, Country Manager for H&M Southeast Asia, “at H&M we have worked actively to reduce our climate impact throughout the life cycle of our products. In order to show our commitment, we will once again join Earth Hour and take this opportunity to encourage our employees and customers to be environmentally responsible”.

How can you make a difference?

H&M is encouraging customers to come into the store with their own shopping bags to reduce wastage. They will also be selling reusable tote bags fashioned from organic cotton and recycled cotton exclusively at their H&M Orchard Building and ION Orchard outlets.

And yes, before you ask, their worldwide garment collecting initiative is still going strong, which means you can still receive a 15% discount voucher for donating your bag of unwanted garments and textiles (of any brand and in any condition) at H&M stores across the country.
