British Airways reveals how much Singaporeans actually spend on Christmas gifts

Are you surprised?

If the lights that come alive along Orchard Road this time of the year are any indication, it seems like Singaporeans are a Christmas-lovin’ lot. But just how much do Singaporeans spend on gifts over Christmas and how do they prefer spending this yuletide season?

A British Airways survey on 1000 respondents from Singapore found that Singaporeans apparently spend an average of SGD388 on Christmas gifts each year, with nearly half (489) saying they typically visit at least four or more relatives during December.

HEY BIG SPENDER

Despite gifting the same number of presents, men tend to spend 18% more than their female counterparts. Most Singaporeans across different age groups also said they would attend between 1 to 2 Christmas parties, which accounts for part of their spending. Those aged 55 and above spend the most at such social gatherings, with younger respondents aged 18 to 24 are less likely to spend anything more than SGD180 – an amount lower than the study’s average.

WHY DO SINGAPOREANS LOVE CHRISTMAS SO MUCH?

Like everyone else who celebrates the holiday, they love Christmas for the gift-giving spirit and also the time that they get off work. Don’t expect Christmas cards to be a thing here however; it turns out that sending festive cards appear to be less popular among Singaporeans, with slightly over a quarter of them saying they would send more than 10 cards every Christmas.

DECEMBER TRAVELS ARE A TREND

Although over half of respondents said they preferred staying home during the holidays, a sizable 45% of them said they would travel to at least somewhere abroad to visit their loved one at Christmas.

The study also found that over one third (35%) of participants said they preferred spending Christmas Day out of Singapore, with 8 out of 10 of them saying it had to ideally be somewhere cold. Their favourite destinations? It turns out Japan, Australia and the UK are the favourite winter December travel locations.

So, do these findings speak to your and your family’s Christmas traditions and habits?
