If you find that it’s getting hard to close your drawers every time you open to get a mascara or blush, then it’s high time you did some clearing out.

With so many beauty products out there, we can’t help but add them to our makeup collection with every new lanuch. Over time, you may realize that your small collection has grown and may make your bathroom or vanity area look cluttered and messy.

Before you do decide on ways to organize your makeup collection though, it’s important to take note of expired makeup products. Makeup products do have a shelf life and need to be replaced after some time for safety reasons. To decide what to toss and what to keep, here is a quick guide to the acceptable period of use for most makeup products:

  • Mascara, pencil or gel eyeliners are best used within 4 to 6 months of opening
  • Face foundations (liquid, stick and cream) are best used within 6 months to 1 year
  • Powder based products can be used for 2 to 3 years
  • Lip products have a shelf life of 2 to 3 years

While it may pain you to throw away a product that has not been used as often as you would have wished to, it is better to be safe than sorry. The first tell-tale sign of a product that has expired can be from the smell. Should the product smell funky or the texture appear to have changed, it’s definitely high time you dropped it in the bin.

Now that your collection has been cleared from expired pieces, head over to the gallery up top for ways to organise your growing stash!
