Music and More: Soon you can Shazam any physical object

Don’t know what this object is? Shazam it! Our favourite music app will soon be a real-life tangible version of Google.

Shazam

There aren’t a lot of apps whose names have been turned into a verb, proving just how revolutionary Shazam is. Now, the London-based app will make our life even easier.

“The famous blue button that our users love will remain on the home screen but will be able to do much more,” said Shazam’s Chief Executive Rich Riley, who wishes to “expand the universe of what you can Shazam”.

Soon, you can Shazam anything from a piece of art to food. The iconic button will even be able to identify the soundtrack of a DVD just by scanning the cover, and pull out nutritional information from a cereal box!

The dramatic project has raised USD30 million in January from several unidentified billionaires and financial institutions, valuing the company to around USD1 billion – the first time a British mobile app has reached that level. While Shazam is yet to release the nitty gritty of the brilliant idea, you can still try the concept with other existing apps. A feature on Amazon’s Fire Phone called Firefly is one of them, which uses image recognition and barcode scanners to help costumers identify products and buy them.

Living in such a tech-savvy world, new tech advancements shouldn’t surprise us. But to be a tap away from a sea of information explaining the objects around us is definitely jaw-dropping.
